The accommodation is situated in Combloux, one of the longest established ski areas in France. You won’t find lift queues or crowded pistes here (you’ll often have the pistes to yourselves!). Even at half term it’s relatively quiet compared to larger more well known resorts. During the 2012 winter season, Combloux saw some of the highest snowfalls and best skiing conditions in a decade.
All the photos you see above on this website were taken in the 2011 and 2012 ski seasons in and around Combloux. See live webcam shots from the top of the main Combloux ski area at Les Salles.
The nearest ski slopes to the village are just 3km away at La Cry (less than 10 minutes by car) and it’s also just 3km from the apartment along the main road to the Princesse gondola lift which gives access to the extensive St Gervais / Megeve ski area. Half an hour’s drive away (20km) is Les Contamines, with broad open pistes above the tree line, particularly good for off-piste, and very different in character to the local skiing. Click on the piste map below for a larger version and with the location of the apartment shown.
All these areas are covered by a single lift pass. Where else could you ski 445km of runs on one pass, all within sight of the highest mountain in Europe? Combloux is a great base from which to explore this entire area, as this typical Savoyarde village sits at an altitude of 1000m and is easily accessible throughout the winter.
Further afield, but still easily accessible and feasible for a great day’s skiing are Praz sur Arly and the Espace Daimant, Les Houches and the World Cup downhill course, Chamonix and Argentiere with arguably some of the toughest skiing in Europe. You’ll need to buy a separate day pass to cover these.
Portes du Mont Blanc ski pass
The Portes du Mont Blanc ski pass covers Combloux, Jaillet and La Giettaz which are all interlinked. It’s a great place for families or groups of mixed ability. There is continuing investment in the Combloux ski area with the installation of several new lifts:
- 2008: Pertuis, a 6 seater high speed chairlift in Combloux
- 2012: La Ravine, a 4 person chairlift at Le Jaillet
- 2013: La Torraz, a replacement chairlift at La Giettaz
Combloux has:
- Pistes from 1100m to 1930m altitude with sheltered, tree-lined runs
- 100km of pistes (7 blacks, 28 reds, 17 blues and 11 greens) served by 33 lifts
- 120 snow cannons
- 2 snowboard parks
- 7 mountain restaurants with a further 9 restaurants at the bottom of the pistes
This area is great value. A six day Portes du Mont Blanc pass for an adult is 134.50€ (2012 prices). Day passes are also available.
